UPDATE 27 Dec 2010: Habibollah Latifi’s Family Arrested; Concern Over Impending Execution
From: International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran:
Following news of postponement of Habibollah Latifi’s execution, an informed source in Sanandaj told the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran that several members of the prisoner of conscience’s family were arrested by security forces on Saturday night. Additional information indicates that certain individuals who had accompanied the family in pursuing a halt to Latifi’s execution have also been arrested.
The source told the Campaign that Saleh Nikbakht, one of Latifi’s lawyers, has returned to Tehran. During the past few hours the Campaign has also received news of brutal force used during the arrests of Latifi family members.
Several sources close to the case told the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran that they are concerned the prisoner of conscience’s family were arrested in an effort to silence them while the execution is carried out. The authorities may not be pleased with the wave of publicity the family created around Latifi’s impending execution. Habibollah Latifi’s lawyers have not yet provided details about the postponement of his execution and next steps in his case.
UPDATE 26 Dec 2010: HABIB’S EXECUTION HAS BEEN POSTPONED
From Iran Human Rights
Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam, the spokesperson of Iran Human Rights said: “We are very happy that the efforts of the civil rights defenders in Iran gave results and Habibollah Latifi’s scheduled execution was halted, and we hope that this campaign continues until his death sentence has been removed”. He added: “We must emphasize that the sentence has only been postponed and as long as the death sentence is still over him, he will be in danger”.
From FREEDOM MESSENGER:
Mr. Latifi, a Kurdish student at the University of Eylam, was arrested on October 23, 2007, in the City of Sanandaj. He was detained in unknown location. Eight months later (July 3, 2008), he was sentenced to death by the Revolutionary Court in the City of Sanandaj, convicted of “endangering state security”. The proceedings were closed, and his own lawyer was not allowed to attend the hearing. After more than one month the lawyer was informed about the sentence.
While in custody, Mr. Latifi was reportedly subjected to torture or other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment such as torturing him in front of other prisoners in order to confess their membership in an opposition party. As Mr. Latifi’s health condition was gravely deteriorated due to constant torture, he was transferred to a hospital for a certain period of time. He was returned to the prison in Sanandaj upon release from hospital.
Mr. Latifi is now very weak; he suffers the pain and endless coughing of bronchitis, complains about fever, hard breathing, broken bones, and torture wounds, also in his face.
